*
I haven't written on M-C's blog for a while... I now have a gorgeous 5 months old daughter and therefore I have been a bit busy posting photos on Facebook and changing diapers. Maybe I'll find a way to post a photo to you soon but for now - I have another amazing thing to say to you and that is that we finally have Audiogram's catalogue on Bluetracks.ca! It was not an easy thing to do. Since early 2004, we have been patiently waiting for them to come around and accept to take the plunge and join our Independent and DRM-free MP3 online music store... very radical! So it's done! They are now with us! I'm very happy about it. Here is their artist list :

Yes i know, i am not writing so much these days. It is summer, and appart from the work i have to do, the internet has xtreme low priority in my life right now.

While you are on facebook, we must be somewhere where the grass is green - and soon we'll lounge on the Cote d'azur beaches before heading to Corsica. Everything to forget that september is just some weeks away. uh.

I love Montreal so much that I spent my 8 day vacation here. Ok it's also because I was too broke to go anywhere else. So I walked around the city, roaming with no aim whatsoever, like a tourist. I visited St-Leonard (wow;), Hochelaga-Maisonneuve (double wow;) and I went to visit some old colleagues in Old Montreal. I used to work at Café Titanic ten years ago, but never lost touch with the owners Patrick and Rob, who've also opened Cluny Art Bar, which is in the Darling Foundry. Unfortunately got there too late for lunch though, but check it out if ever you're down there.

Precious

I am into redoing Vu d'ici's design. Something which has been on my todo for the last 2 years, can you believe it?

Somehow, i did not know where to start. And now, i realize how difficult it is to create a new design for my blog - which is, i am thinking, more than 'just a blog'.

This place has turned really personal. A collection of my pictures, favorite links, a collage of my thoughts and artwork, a diary, a note book, a sketchbook - all this used as a virtual window on my life which anyone can see.

So yes, it is not just about changing the style and look of this space, its not about switching a new theme on - it is about making it as close as possible to who i am, what i am, and creating a flexible container for the precious stuff i want to archive and share. This space is not a blog anymore, it is the virtual-me.

I think never before i have been so aware of the fact that i am, like every other being, getting older. "Getting older" until now sounded to me like 'grow up to become an adult' - i guess it should have stopped there, once you are an adult. You grow up, and remain, an adult. No moving further, i should not get older. I should not reach the day where girls my age are getting pregnant and moving into family mode. My boyfriend should not get gray hairs, my mom should not retreat, my brother, this small thing i've seen from his day one on earth, should not become a dad!

And oh dear, it isn't about responsibilities - i moved out at 18, and have handled everything by myself from this day. It is about changing, growing as a plant to a three, becoming a forest. Maybe it's about control. About me not standing the idea that nature control my life and will, whatever i do, give all people i love gray hairs. I am fighting to stand eyes wide open to notice my now, taking mental pictures of everything and getting my stuff ready because sooner than later, i'll find myself surrounded by old, but wise, friends.

our bodies as landscape for digital life to explore

Delicate Boundaries, a work by Chris Sugrue, uses human touch to dissolve the barrier of the computer screen. Using the body as a means of exchange, the system explores the subtle boundaries that exist between foreign systems and what it might mean to cross them. Lifelike digital animations swarm out of their virtual confinement onto the skin of a hand or arm when it makes contact with a computer screen creating an imaginative world where our bodies are a landscape for digital life to explore.

Exploring

I've been doing yoga since 2001. At that time i was living in hamburg, germany, and went to a session of Kundalini Yoga suggested to me by a friend. Since then, doing yoga has been the best way i found to calm down, and most of all, to get back to what i could call my real essence - getting a clear perspective on what's important, i mean really important, on the long run, and clearly see what is the essence of what i want.

There are many different kind of yoga, and meditation practices. I think there's something for each kind of people - each of us has to try what feels good to try, usually a strong gut feeling will show you what's best for you (meaning, my kind of practice will maybe not fit you!).

As a curious person, i do love exploring these new fields - different practices of yoga and meditation - not in a naive way, but more as a way to open my mind and find my own way to connect body and soul with nature and creativity, something our culture has in my opinion failed to teach us. Go, explore!

Bruce Nauman, I love neon

The true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths.
Bruce Nauman

*

The first thing i saw entering the Museum of Contemporary Art were some flashy bright colored neon words - similar to what i have been playing around with my stencil in the last 3 weeks. Stunning.

Later on, came around more words, more social commentary passed on using commercial neon light, more vibrant luminous colors, then human neon shapes - and then the videos, the Clown Torture installation and others, with less and less common sense.

Videos : see some of the videos which are part of the exhibition can be seen here;

Remix :
see people fooling around as Bruce Nauman on YouTube, here. An ode to Bruce Nauman here and here and here and here and here.

Lonely-nest

Topics and things i would like to write about:

- how to be alone together (about couples and relationships, how to be able to fully be one so that we can be 2gether). This topic seems to be kept silent around couples, not wanting to acknowledge the fact that to be in love and live with someone are not always things that should go hand-in-hand;

- how i can become mediocre if i dont spend time alone and create stuff;

- the need of loneliness in a creative life.

We are just about to hit the flickr Montreal party, i get a strange feeling when i see all the 'word of mouth' going on about the event.

People sending me messages and invites of all kind - but who are these people? Who's really wanting me to party there tonight?

Who are these people, hired and paid to make me feel i should be there or i'll be a looser?

This is the danger of Web 2.0!
Marketing people wearing cool flickr masks, its like a nightmare where i cannot clearly see who's who!

Until when will flickr be the coolest? 'Till this happens, i'll be getting some free drinks at the event tonite - trying to remove masks from faces.

It is a new experience for me to get one of my favorite author's book just when it's hitting the stands, while at the same time i can read on the author's blog all the excitement she felt from having her work out.

I did not know what to expect from Wreck this journal, until i received my copy. Hell fun! -- tear, rub, break, lick, stick, drag out, wash -- carry it around with you, here is your new friend!

I see this book as a statement that in order to create freely, we as creative beings must be able to experiment, explore, polish and scratch over, disrupt, destroy and rebuild constantly - let go of preconceived ideas, just play in a innocent and almost savage way, as we did as kids, color on our fingers, over our faces. There is no right and wrong, just do it.

Let go. Let go! You should be playing!

"neurosis,
only attaches itself to fertile ground,
where it can flourish

(...)

fear is a powerful drug,
overcome it and,
you think that you can do,
anything!

(...)

fear of losing energy,
is draining

it locks up your chest,
shuts down the heart,
miserly ,
and stingy,
let's open up : share!"

Lyrics from Innocence.

I've been listening to Björk's Volta since weeks, walking around Manhattan and bike riding along Montreal's bike paths with the african beats of Earth Intruders and Hyperballad's version 2007 Wanderlust.

Sounding a little chaotic at first, i thought of this album as a retrospective of Björk's work - but in fact no. I realized that the main difference in this album was that for the fist time in Björk's work, i could clearly hear and feel the influences of other pop-eletro singer-songwriters women of the last years, the like M.I.A, Peaches and PJ Harvey.

Fascinating to see how this icon who inspired many is now herself remixing these inspirations on a new ground, opening herself with powerful lyrics no one should ignore, where she is clearly pointing fear as being a drug, and at our own responsibility for the lifes we get.

No need to say the artwork for this record is truly amazing.

"I have lost my origin
and I don't want to find it again
rather sailing into nature's laws
and be held by ocean's paws

wanderlust!
relentlessly craving wanderlust
peel off the layers
until you get to the core

(...)

lust for comfort
suffocates the soul
this relentless
restlessness
liberates me
sets me free

I feel at home whenever
the unknown surrounds me
I receive its embrace
aboard my floating house"

From Wanderlust.

meïdia is now 2 years old!

After many (MANY!) experiences, leaving the 9 to 5 world, jumping into the unknown, learning to listen to my intuitions in all business aspect, meeting different collaborators and clients, trying to integrate artsy ideas in commercial projects, looking to find my own way (and finding a partner on the way), start to earn a living doing what i want - 24 months have gone, and all this is still growing. I feel like i planted seeds, and after much work and taking care of the seeds, something is coming out. I can now look at it, and give it direction.

This whole business thing is completely organic, and we are now gardeners, using our creativity to create the garden we are dreaming of!

In review, our clients over these last 2 years : Bandeapart.fm (Radio-Canada), Musique Plus, Astral Média Radio Interactif, P45, Ubisoft Montreal, Cirque du Soleil, Tellabs, Luce Beaulieu.

Our laboratory, experimental, freestyle projects - the ones we do for fun, by passion :

publier des magazines à tout prix

coté magazines en ligne, il y a ceux qui sont des magazines papier qui sont devenu web (avec plus ou moins de succès). et il y a, depuis quelques années, une foule de publications disponibles uniquement en format pdf.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;"src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1308/544654222_c7fa363cb1.jpg" width="390" height="219" alt="pdf-mags" />

The new punk?

update by m-c :

As strange as this might sound after writing in previous posts about feminism, and trying to better define today's "Feminism" by a new term, such as suggested with "Equalityism", i just found out about The International Mens Fashion Freedom Network. Since chris posted this article about men clothes being boring, many links are coming to Vu d'ici via the IFF website.

About IFF :
"Call it fashion freedom, call it mens lib, call it fun, cool, different do it for comfort, whatever! This website aimed at those men who see the comfort/style that exists outside of trousers and shorts and want some of it for themselves.

Its just 60 years since women started wearing trousers and today many women spend more time in trousers than in skirts. Women won their right to fashion freedom because they fought for it. Now is the time for men to do the same.

Men have spent the last 300 years losing their fashion freedom. In times gone by we used to wear tights, cloaks, robes, Toga's, kilts and skirts etc. Its time to regain some of the comfort that we once enjoyed!

Males in non western cultures have maintained their varied clothing, and if you were to travel to Thailand, Bali, Malaysia, Fiji, Hawai, India and some Arab countries it would become very obvious that mens clothing without a hole for each leg is very much still in existance.

(...)

I look forward to the day when I can delete this website as "no longer necessary". But I think we will have a tougher time in obtaining our fashion freedom than women did just 60 years ago."

I love to discover new fashion items for men, especially when these are breaking some "rules". Nowadays it seems that remixing typical female clothes for men is the "new punk". Men in skirts, men with long earrings or men wearing high heels are getting more attention than any other fashion style on the street. And I am not talking about transvestites/crossdressers who try to pass as women. I am more interested in how to reuse typical female fashion items for men, since the other way round - women wearing clothes which have their origin in male clothes (just think of cowboy boots, jeans, etc.) - is quite common since several years.

So I was quite happy that I discovered fashion designer Marjan Pejoski who is breaking some of these "rules". His new collection for men is even offering high heels for men! Of course we could argue now if the concept of high heels is making sense at all - even for women. But I don't want to get into these (health) issues now. I would simply try these shoes, since it is something different for men (and I am very bored with male fashion since years, because it is not changing at all - the concept is always the same: look at trousers, shoes, etc.).

Another thing which is interesting to me is the reaction of many women towards more extravagant clothes for men. It seems that they don't like it at all! I read many comments on the web and it feels to me that women think men are "stealing" something from their "area". Or that men start to compete with women indirectly (just compare the ultra-thin bodies of models and the bodies of young males; there is not so much difference). Maybe that is the reason why... maybe you - dear reader - can tell me?

The only thing which bothers me with the collection of Marjan Pejoski is, that he used extremely androgynous models to present his collection. In my opinion, there is absolutely no need for that.

Anyways, it is good to see something new in the fashion world for men. And I hope many men will follow and try to experience something new on their bodies. And remember, you don't need to be gay to try something new! ;-)

Check out the current collection of Marjan Pejoski (PDF download).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;"src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/242/523633327_a8843c3e8b_o.jpg" width="315" height="386" alt="danse_fta" />
